UnterStrömung

UnterStrömung is an experimental exploration of the profound loss of significance, articulated through the medium of projection onto miniature sets. This work navigates anachronistic timelines and the fractures created by recursive feedback, merging result and trial into a singular artistic experience. As characters dissolve into light and shadow, they embark on a quest to grasp their own projections, revealing the intricate layers of perception and reality.
The project intertwines morphemes with derivational metaphors and kinematic equations, utilizing the method of projection onto meticulously crafted miniature environments. Some sets elucidate their origins and contexts, while others serve as deconstructed remnants of associative deduction. In this essayistic study, the act of reflection becomes a plane for further projection, inviting viewers to engage in a dialogue with their own interpretations.

Project
In working on UnterStrömung, I drew inspiration from various sources, recognizing the fluidity of structures that defy simple categorization. The works of the Brothers Quay, the pantheistic worlds of A. Jodorowsky, and the metaphysical inquiries of A. Tarkovsky inform my approach. I aim not to provide definitive answers but to pose a series of questions, much like a deconstruction that transcends art, architecture, and philosophy.
Mark Wigley's notion of a constructive architect resonates deeply with my exploration; it speaks to identifying and localizing inherent problems within form. This dynamic relationship between structure and observation serves as a foundational tool for my work.
Themes
At its core, UnterStrömung grapples with the theme of responsibility—both towards oneself and others—within various contexts, whether historical, collective, or hierarchical. It delves into the metaphysical origins of language and the questions it provokes, probing how constructs like morality, power, and love shape our contemporary existence.
Character Dynamics
The film features three pivotal characters—Marek, Esmodan, and Sahara—who embody non-trivial positions within a complex network. Their interactions traverse various temporal circumstances, converging through shared consciousness. While Esmodan embodies emotional contemplation, Marek represents rationality, and Sahara occupies a chaotic metaphysical realm. This interplay creates tension, as each character navigates their existence and the structural constraints that define them.
