Twitter on Health

A study of public sentiment on Twitter about health topics. In May 2023, over three days, Nefeli Dellepiani, Dora Kohalmi, PhD, and Daniel Herrmann analyzed tweets on COVID-19, monkeypox, influenza and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Data and method

Tweets from November 2022 to February 2023, scraped from Twitter, for several countries. Sentiment analysis of tweets and hashtags; the results are compared by topic, country and time.

Findings

The emotional range runs from fear and frustration to relief and optimism. The differences point to an interplay between public perception and government responses, most visibly in sectors affected by restrictions, such as hospitality. The data show how different countries responded to health crises and how the public discourse on health changed over the period.

The findings can be explored in an interactive Streamlit application.
